10 Minutes with a Maker | Gary Fuller (Master Paper Maker)
“It does look like a vat of porridge and it has got that porridgy colour… and that colour… there’s no additives or dyes or anything, the colours purely come from the banana fibre.” What does it take to make a new kind of paper: Lush commissioned Master Paper Maker, Gary Fuller, of Frogmore Mill, in Aspley, to make packaging paper with Organic Fair Trade Banana Fibre. Frogmore make paper from 75% recycled material and 25% banana fibre, prepared by One Planet Café, based in Zambia. This beautiful paper adds a finishing touch to Juicy Lush gift box. Cathy Haynes, curator, artist, writer and educator, meets with Gary at Frogmore; as he prepares to make the first batch, using an old machine and all his senses. Join Cathy in this sensory-rich interview as Gary lets us in to the old paper mill and into a world that is largely outside the experience and often the imagination of those of us who don’t share their specialism. Cathy gets an inside view of their practical process, how they think and what drives them, leaving the listener with greater understanding – helping us look and reflect more deeply on how things are made and the process and meaning behind them.
