Matt Shaw | Reimagining Lodge Hill

Lodge Hill in Kent is a former military training site. It's also an ancient woodland and rare grassland recognised as one of the most important sites in the UK for the Nightingale. Nightingales are beloved by poets, musicians, birdwatchers, and most everyone else, but Medway Council is proposing to build 5,000 homes on Lodge Hill, a site so important for these rapidly declining birds - numbers breeding in the UK have fallen by as much as 90% since the 1960s - that the Government declared it a legally-protected Site of Special Scientific Interest in 2013. Poet and musician Matt Shaw spent two days at Lodge Hill on a visit organised by People Need Nature's Miles King, and used field recordings as well as the voices of Miles, Gill Moore from Friends of the North Kent Marshes and writer Jullian Hoffman to create the deeply thoughtful soundtrack reproduced here.
